In what has to be a disappointing finish to a marvelous baseball season, the Hotchkiss Bulldogs enjoyed a 7-2 win in first-round play in Pueblo at the 2016 State 2A Baseball Championships. A shocking 5-3 loss (in eight innings) to Limon's Badgers in a second game on Friday eliminated the Bulldogs from this year's state 2A playoffs.
Hotchkiss 7, Peyton 2
The Bulldogs wasted little time putting runs on the board as they plated three in the first inning and never looked back. Another four runs in the third was all that was needed as Hotchkiss cruised to the win.
Peyton's two runs came in the top of the third and sliced the Bulldogs' lead to one, 3-2. The four-run bottom half of the inning took the wind out of the Panther's sails.
Hotchkiss out-hit Peyton 6-4 on its way to victory.
Cole Carvill led the way for Hotchkiss with a triple and three RBIs. Freshman Presley Pene and senior Cesar Gonzalez had an RBI each in the win for the Bulldogs.
Peyton's Gahrett Shaw was 1-3 and had two RBIs.
Cesar Gonzalez (5-2) was the winning pitcher. Gonzalez worked seven innings, gave up four hits and two runs while striking out nine Panthers. The two losses against Gonzalez came at the hands of Paonia.
Limon 5, Hotchkiss 3
Jonathan Gonzalez started the game for Hotchkiss and finished, eight innings later, with a 5-3 loss to the Badgers.
The Bulldogs led 3-2 going to the top of the seventh inning, where Limon scored the tying run to send the game to extra innings after Hotchkiss failed to score in its half of the inning.
Limon scored twice in the eighth and Hotchkiss was unable to respond, leaving the game at 5-3 in favor of the Badgers.
Cesar Gonzalez was 4-4, scored two runs, hit two doubles and knocked in three runs for the Bulldogs. Alex Aguilera was 2-2 with an RBI and Cole Carvill was 1-2 with two RBIs.
Jonathan (5-1) was saddled with the loss after going eight innings, allowing four hits and five runs (four earned) and striking out six Limon batters.
Hotchkiss' season was highlighted by a 2A District 2 title and an 18-3 overall season record.
