Hotchkiss scored 104 points to finish eighth out of 13 teams at the Panther Invitational.
At 170, junior Jace Peebles was runner-up. In quarterfinals Peebles (7-1) pinned David Lopez (5-3) of Cedaredge in 3:00, and advanced to the first-place match with a third-round pin over Paonia's Carlos Lozano (8-1). The No. 2 seed, Peebles lost the championship match in a 10-6 decision to No. 1 seeded Delta senior Aiden Barrios (5-0).
At 145, junior JD Miller won three matches by fall to place third. Miller lost in quarterfinals to undefeated defending regional champion Tannen Kennedy of Meeker and won both his consolation matches by fall. In the third place match he won by fall (2:26) over a Montezuma-Cortez wrestler, Anthony Abeyta (6-2).
Seniors Landen Mayberry (120, 3-2), Presley Pene (132, 7-3) and sophomore Christian Matus (285, 6-2) placed fourth. At 106, Anthony Scanlon (4-6) placed fifth.
Hotchkiss' Ethan Guy (160, 6-4) and Teagan Sommer (195, 2-6) finished this year's Panther Invitational in sixth place.
A collaborative effort between the Delta County Sheriff's Office and municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Delta County has resulted in a proposal for a 1 percent sales tax increase to fund public safety. A PowerPoint presentation titled "Back the Badge" is starting to make the rounds at city/town council meetings, service club luncheons and other events.
