Take away the forfeits and Hotchkiss and Cedaredge were well-matched in last Thursday annual wrestling dual. The dual opened at 138 pounds, with Traycer Hall winning by major decision (11-1) over AJ Robidoux of Cedaredge. At 145, Bulldog JD Miller and Bruin Brian Hoerr were well-matched, with Hoerr scoring a takedown in the second period for a 2-0 win over Miller.
In a match that saw takedowns, two- and three-point near falls, escapes, and three reversals, Bruins sophomore Toby Waddell scored a 16-12 win over Bulldog junior Jace Peebles. In another action-packed match, Teagan Somers followed with a 7-6 win for Hotchkiss over Bruin Brody Wagner.
At 220, senior Taj Van der Linde won by fall (1:09) over first-year sophomore Hector Elizalde. At 285, Bruin sophomore Derek Sanchez won by a 6-2 decision over Bulldog sophomore Christian Matus.
At 106, Bruin Lane Hunsberger was up, 7-1, when he won by fall (3:10) over Bulldog Anthony Scanlon.
The Bulldogs scored two consecutive pins, starting at 113 pounds with senior Landen Mayberry winning at 2:24 with a fall over freshman Lucas Hoerr; at 126, Presley Pene won by fall (3:47) over Adrian Nieto.
At 132, Bruin junior Sean Dale, ended the dual with a 5-2 decision over Bulldog senior Sergio Campos. Dale is ranked first in state at 126 pounds by On the Mat; Campos is ranked second at 132 pounds.
Hotchkiss 42, MHS 38
In a wrestling dual that saw just one win by decision, the Hotchkiss Bulldogs defeated visiting Meeker Friday, 42-38.
Anthony Scanlon (106), Robert Cochran (120), Presley Pene (126), Sergio Campos (132) and Traycer Hall (138) all won their matches by fall. In the 145-pound match, Bulldog junior JD Miller got to the third period against No. 1-ranked Tannen Kennedy, with Kennedy winning by technical fall (20-5, 5:13). Christian Matus (285) and Landen Mayberry (113) won by forfeit.
In the 195-pound match, James Amick won by fall (1:26) over Sommer; and at 220, Cowboy Harvey Reese won by fall (2:42) over Hector Elizalde. Meeker won three matches -- 152, 160, and 182 -- by forfeit.
Hotchkiss also won a dual against Norwood Friday night, 61-12. Scanlon, Mayberry, Cochran, Campos and Peebles won their matches by fall, and Pene won by major decision.
