A nine-run second inning boosted the Hotchkiss Bulldogs to a 17-2 win over Rangely Saturday. With an 11-1 overall and 4-0 conference record, Hotchkiss remains in second place in 2A District standings.
The freshman-heavy Panthers (1-16, 0-6) have not had a successful season and are at the bottom of the district standings. Jesus Macias was 3 for 3 for the game with 1 RBI and a double. Chase Hiatt, Jamison Yanish and Brian Gonzalez all batted over .500 and had three RBIs each for the game. Presley Pene was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a double, and Josie Hiatt was 1 for 2 with one RBI.
On the mound, Jonathan Gonzalez struck out 11 and allowed two earned runs and three hits in five innings.
In their conference win against the Panthers, the Bulldogs took a 15-0 lead in the second inning and held the Panthers from scoring until the fourth inning. Eli Kirk was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and Yanish was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a triple.
Pene threw seven Ks and allowed two earned runs and four hits in five innings; Kirk threw six Ks and walked three in two innings.
