Bulldogs win a pair in hardball play last week

The Hotchkiss Bulldogs struck out 11 and allowed five hits in last Wednesday's non-conference, 7-1 win against the visiting Rifle Bears.

Eli Kirk allowed one hit and one run, walked four and struck out six in the first three innings of the game. Luke Ellis scored Rifle's only run in the first inning on an error at third base after tagging second on a flyout by Derek Wagler.

Hotchkiss tied the game in the bottom of the first, with Presley Pene opening with a standing double, then scoring from third on a sacrifice fly to center field by Jonathan Gonzalez.

In the second inning, Eli Kirk struck out three batters, leaving two Rifle players stranded.

Bulldogs junior Marvin Guereque opened the second with a walk, freshman Yahir Chavez singled, and Brian Gonzalez scored Guereque on one-run double. Josh Pachl hit a single, and Pene scored Chavez on a double. Pachl scored on an error, and Kirk drove in Pene on a one-run single to give Hotchkiss a 5-1 lead.

In the third inning Rifle left a runner on third base. Guereque opened the bottom of the third on a double, then took advantage of Bears errors to score, giving the Bulldogs a 6-1 lead.

Gonzalez took the mound in the top of the fourth, allowing no hits and striking out two Bears.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Kirk singled, stole second, and took advantage of errors to score. The Bears ended the inning on a 6-4-3 double play.

Gonzalez allowed two hits in the final two innings and ended the game with five Ks and no walks.

Hotchkiss is 2-0 heading into this week's play.

In their 10-7 win at Roaring Fork on March 14, the Bulldogs had 13 hits and three errors. Presley Pene allowed four hits, four earned runs and three walks and struck out five in 3.1 innings; Jesus Macias struck out five and allowed one hit and one run. Jamison Yanish allowed one earned run and walked three.

To begin the game, the Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning, and added five runs in the third. The Rams answered with two runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to trail, 8-7. Hotchkiss scored its final two runs in the sixth inning. The defense held the Rams scoreless in the last two innings for the win.

Gonzalez was 3 for 3 including a double, one run and four RBIs for the game. Kirk scored three runs and hit a double, a triple and had one RBI. Pene was 3 for 4 with three runs and Guereque was 3 for 4 and scored one run.
