Cedaredge recently received recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation, being named a 2017 Tree City USA for its commitment to effective urban forest management. The town has been a Tree City USA for 24 consecutive years.

Cedaredge has received this recognition in part for its observance of Arbor Day. To commemorate Arbor Day this year, the town's tree board members are planting three trees on the east side of the bandstand in the town park. These trees, along with understory ornamental plantings to follow, will be our tribute to the town's 25th year in a row of celebrating Arbor Day. Mayor Eugene Welch will read the proclamation. The tree board will be assisted by students from the Cedaredge Elementary School's fifth grade class.

In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world.

Arbor Day is not just another holiday. It is a promise to future generations to enrich our community with trees that will be a source of beauty and joy in our lives. Trees provide not only beauty and shade to our community but also improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide wildlife habitat, as well as many other benefits.

As always, the public is encouraged to attend this event. The tree board takes great pride in the cooperative efforts of the Cedaredge community in promoting the planting and proper maintenance of trees. For further information contact Cedaredge Tree Board chair Jim Leser at jfljwl@gmail.com.
