Two Delta County teams competed in last Saturday's (Jan. 5) Eagle Valley Invitational wrestling tournament in Gypsum.
Cedaredge was the top placer of the two local teams finishing with 142 points and second place. Delta's Panthers scored 91 points and finished third in the 22-team field. Eagle Valley won its own tournament with 187 points.
Cedaredge sophomore Trey Geyer (20-2) won the 126-pound weight class with senior teammates Austin Crawford (13-9; 160 pounds), Toby Waddell (9-7; 170 pounds), Taj Van der Linde (16-5; 220 pounds) and Derek Sanchez (19-4; 285 pounds) finishing second. Freshman 106-pounder, Lane Hunsberger, lost a 6-4 decision in the title match to finish runner-up.
Sophomore AJ Robidoux (15-7) won the third place match at 132 pounds with a fall over Buena Vista's Kaden McFee.
Cedaredge will host Paonia on Jan. 10 (Thursday) at 6 p.m. as the Bruins resume their wrestling schedule in 2019. The Bruins are at Rocky Ford on Jan. 11 and take part at Pueblo Centennial on Saturday.
Senior Aiden Barrios (170 pounds) and junior Gauge Lockhart (195 pounds) paced Delta High School's wrestling team at the Eagle Valley Invitational with first place finishes.
The Panthers' 126-pounder, Ben Koch (6-2) and 160-pounder Jeffery Griffith (8-1), placed third to finish their weekend.
Delta is back on the mat Jan. 10 against the visiting Palisade Bulldogs. Varsity matches begin at 7 p.m. The Panthers are in Vernal, Utah, for tournament action Jan. 11-12.
A collaborative effort between the Delta County Sheriff's Office and municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Delta County has resulted in a proposal for a 1 percent sales tax increase to fund public safety. A PowerPoint presentation titled "Back the Badge" is starting to make the rounds at city/town council meetings, service club luncheons and other events.
