Photo submitted Sadie Mae Smith and Scott Shishim are pictured in front of SK Bikes in Paonia after Sadie picked out a new bike. Sadie won the bike through a library program called Passport to Health.

Sadie Mae Smith is a kindergarten student at Cedaredge Elementary. During the month of October, Sadie participated in a countywide library program called "Passport to Health." The program is aimed at youth to encourage healthy choices through offering incentives.

Sadie, along with many other children in Delta County, completed the health-related activities in a passport booklet and turned it in at her local library to be entered into a drawing.

On Monday, Nov. 5, library staff contacted Sadie's family to let them know that Sadie had won the prize for the October drawing ... a new bike from SK bikes in Paonia. Scott Shishim, owner of SK Bikes, was happy to sponsor the bike for the passport program and feels it is a good way to give back to the community. "And I believe in books and bikes," Shishim commented.

SK Bikes is one of many Passport to Health program sponsors, including A Kidz Clinic, City of Delta, Delta Family Center and Delta County School District. Every student in Delta County was provided with a passport booklet through the schools and they are available at each library in Delta County. The program is running through December in conjunction with the Discover Health exhibit at Delta Library.

Children who did not complete their passport in October still have time to participate. The November grand prize is a youth pass to Bill Heddles Recreation Center and the December prize is an outdoor games package sponsored by the Delta Family Center.

Sadie and her dad visited with Shishim at the bike shop on Saturday, Nov. 10, to find the best bike for Sadie. "I want the blue one!" Sadie said, after looking at her options. Shishim ordered her bike and Sadie will be back to pick it up in about a week.
