Senior Courtney Freeman and junior Makayla Kehmeier played a major role in Cedaredge High School's three wins on the hardwood last week. The duo was leading scorers in all three of the games, won by the Bruins, helping Cedaredge climb to a 10-3 overall record and 2-1 in 3A WSL play.
Cedaredge defeated Rangely, 49-26, on Jan. 22; slipped past Basalt, 41-36, in Basalt on Jan. 25 and came from behind to defeat Gunnison (5-9 and 2-4) on Jan. 26.
Freeman was the week's leading scorer for the Bruins with 48 points in three games and Kehmeier finished with 34 for the week's work.
Against Rangely, Kehmeier and Freeman had nine points each, in a game controlled by the Bruins from start to finish. Cedaredge was ahead 32-16 at halftime and never was threatened after that.
An ugly start in Basalt found the Bruins behind, 31-21 after three quarters of play. A 20-5 run by the Bruins in the fourth quarter reversed the tables on the Longhorns allowing Cedaredge to pull off the victory.
Freeman was good for 18 points in Basalt while Kehmeier contributed another 11. Freeman sparked the big fourth-quarter run with 12 of her 18 points coming in the period. Riley Webb had 13 to lead Basalt's offense.
Saturday's battle with Gunnison was a see-saw affair with neither team finding a solution to the other's defense in a 21-21 haltime tie.
The third period was equally close with Cedaredge outscoring the Cowboys by two points for a lead going to the final stanza.
Freeman and Kehmeier were the catalyst in the game with Freeman collecting 21 points, including four 3-point goals and five-of-six at the charity stripe. Kehmeier added 14 points for the winners, all coming in the second half of play, including an 11-point third quarter.
Jenna Wise and Laura Hanks had 15 and 10 points, respectively, to lead Gunnison's attack.
The Bruins have two games next week, beginning with Delta (Jan. 29) and a trip to Coal Ridge Feb. 2 and a 12:30 p.m. game. Cedaredge is in Aspen on Feb. 5 for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
