This year's First Colorado National Bank basketball tournament kicked off with Cedaredge and Paonia playing the first game Friday afternoon in Delta.
This game featured two teams with opposite records. Cedaredge, with its win on Friday night, 53-15, is 5-1 in the new season while Paonia is even at 3-3 after the loss.
It's been some time since a Paonia basketball team, under the guidance of Scott Rienks, has had the type of quarter against the Bruins on Friday. Cedaredge's defense was superb notching a shutout in the opening quarter while the Bruins' offense was busy scoring 13 points. Four Bruins generated the points with Courtney Freeman scoring five of her 11 points in the first period.
An 18-6 run in the second stanza was powered by Kammie Henderson's 6 points with the Eagles' Carly Horn scoring four of Paonia's six counters.
Henderson scored another six points in the third quarter and finished the game as the leading scorer with 14 points. Freeman also had double-digit numbers with 11 points.
Horn's six points were the most scored by a Paonia player in the game.
Cedaredge outscored the Eagles 36-11 in the middle quarters to help provide the big win.
Cedaredge faced Delta for the tournament title on Saturday, Dec. 22. Those results will appear in the Jan. 2 issue along with consolation game results from the girls and boys divisions in the FCNB tournament.
