Cedaredge High School's track and field coach, Kirby Henderson, was honored at the state level this past weekend. Henderson will be entering his 21st year as the head coach at Cedaredge High School and has been a driving force in the success Cedaredge has had in track and field the past two decades.

Henderson was contacted last fall by a Colorado High School Coaches Association representative, who told him he had been nominated for the Colorado Girls' Track & Field Coach of the Year. The nominating individual was unknown to Henderson, and the CHSCA representative didn't say what the nomination was based on. Henderson's undeniable dedication to his athletes and the training process he incorporates into his programs would be a good reason for the resulting success the Bruins have had over the years, and a major contributing factor in his nomination.

Henderson was attending an annual CHSCA track clinic on Saturday, Jan. 26, when he was honored with the presentation of his Girls' Track and Field 2018 Coach of the Year plaque.

"It is a nice honor. I'm lucky to get to work with hard-working athletes and fellow coaches. They are why we are successful," said Henderson.

Henderson began his track coaching tenure at Cedaredge High School as an assistant to Dan Chinn for two seasons. He has been a part of two boys state championships in 2016 and 2017, and two runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2018.

The boys programs have won league/regional titles in 2008, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The girls won league titles in 2011 and 2013 and finished third at state in 2016.

"A key part of the successes has been the coaching staff, the changes we've made in training over the years and the positive attitudes of the athletes," quoted Henderson.

The list of individual and relay champions is long.

Henderson has provided guidance and support for athletes who have won individual and relay team state titles. See related table.

Montrose's Vic Kintz also won big with his selection as the Assistant Coach of the Year in Track and Field and Cross Country.
