Charlie Roscoe Hawkins died at his home in Cedaredge Oct. 18, 2016. He was 99.
He was born at home Nov. 22, 1916, to J.W. and Cora Adams Hawkins in Eckert. He went to school at Tongue Creek.
On Jan. 16, 1939, he married Dale M. Gresham in Hotchkiss; she died Jan. 6, 1982. They had three children, Charles, Judith and Mary.
He was married to Irene for 10 years before her death. In 1995, he married Margaret McMurray in Las Vegas, N.M. She died Jan. 8, 2008.
Mr. Hawkins was a fruit grower in the Surface Creek area.
He served as an Army lineman in France and Germany during World War II. He joined IOOF at the age of 19 and was an active member throughout his life.
He enjoyed gardening, dancing, reading, current affairs, playing cards and games, and his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Judith (Ronald) MacKendrick of Cedaredge, Mary (Thomas) Kalenian of Grand Junction; step-daughters, Macky Spurlock of Decatur, Ill., Kathy (Fred) Allen of Las Vegas, N.M., Rita (Dennis) Hightower of Verona, Mo., Aleta (Russell) Mallette of Las Vegas, N.M.; one brother, John Hawkins; one sister, Esther Barrett of Cedaredge; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives; four brothers, Bruce, Floyd, Roy and Kenneth; six sisters, Dora Ashurst, Helen Buff, May Cotton, Hazel Frey, Margaret McNutt and Ruth Rowell; grandson, Christopher Kalenian; and great-grandson, Dominic Tochtrop.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Cedaredge Cemetery.

The Hotchkiss-Crawford Historial Society will host its annual meeting on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2:00 at the Memorial Hall in Hotchkiss. There will be music, refreshments and a guest speaker, Robert Sibernagel. He is well known in the area as he writes regional history columns for The Daily Sentinel. He was formerly the editorial page editor for that paper for 19 years.
