This is in response to Suzanne Watson's naive and ill researched complaint about the stifling of free speech at the Paonia town meeting in July (letter, Aug. 22). A bit of research into the First Amendment and applicable laws would have taught her that free speech IS limited and a government entity does have the right to place and enforce restrictions on time, place and manner of expression. The right of a governing body to establish and adhere to a code of conduct for meetings IS protected by law.
As a regular attendee, I appreciate that Mayor Stewart makes every attempt to keep the meeting orderly and on task without being hijacked by folks speaking whenever they chose on whatever subject they fixate on. Ms. Watson's removal was not without several warnings to her and after several exclamations.
