The Black Mesa CattleWomen assisted the quarter one cooking class over the past six weeks. The Hotchkiss K-8 students learned about beef, basic nutrition, safe food preparation and presentation. The culminating activity is a beef cook off competition. The students are administered an individual written test over the materials presented. Then the students are provided a pound of hamburger from a member of the Black Mesa CattleWomen, and the group chooses a recipe, menu and table setting. The students work as a team to cook, present the dish and cleanup within a time allotment. During this time they are observed and scored by volunteers from the Black Mesa CattleWomen.
The possible total score is 100 points. The first place team, Buffalo Turkey Turtles, scored an 84.5, cooking its Greek beef gyros. Team members were Lillian Jardon, Annika Knehs, Brenna Beall and Landon Brown. The second place team was the Bulldog Chefs scoring 83 points, with tacos. The third place team, Mexican Mambas, scored 80.5 points, beef tacos. The fourth place team, 4 Stooges, scored 73 points with chili.
