On Dec. 13, the Black Mesa CattleWomen sponsored the second quarter beef cook-off for the Hotchkiss K-8 middle school cooking class taught by Terri Bear and Glenda Young. The students learned about beef, basic nutrition, safe food preparation, and presentation. Students took an individual written test over the materials presented. The team chooses a beef recipe, menu, and table setting then worked together as a group to cook, present the beef dish, and cleanup within 30 minutes. Students on each of the three teams were provided with a pound of ground beef donated by Christy Hawk of the Black Mesa CattleWomen to prepare their beef recipe.
Judges for this cook-off were Pat Sunderland, managing editor of the Delta County Independent, Teresa Burns and Pauline Carr of the Black Mesa CattleWomen. These ladies tallied the scores from the students' written exams, their presentation of the entree, meeting the requirements of My Plate, their table setting, following directions of the recipe, safe preparation and cleanup. The judges walked around and asked questions of each group and observed them before tasting each dish. The teams were very competitive and scored high. The first place team calling themselves the Average Mexican Cooks scored 97.33 points with smothered burritos. Throughout the cook-off they were very confident that they were going to win. Congratulation to Yasmine Campos, Damon Gilmore, Josh Bryant and Cody Pagone. Each of them received a T-shirt from the Black Mesa CattleWomen. The second place team called themselves the La Cena Di Vetro which means The Glass Café. Team members were Danielle Elder, Kevin Regelman, Hayden Moreno, Tegan Oetker, and Shelby Norris and they prepared beef stroganoff. They scored 96.6.
The third place team had only two members and they called themselves the Simple Fries which was fitting as their menu consisted of stuffed burgers with fries. Hunter Hart and Tucker Houseweart served a wonderful burger and scored 86 points.
