Start of the girls' Pantherfest XC race

Delta paced Delta County's contingent of participants at the Pantherfest Cross Country Meet at Confluence Park.

Hotchkiss and Paonia did not have enough participants to warrant team scores in the event but did have individual runners in both the boys' and girls' competition.

Delta had full teams for each division with both squads placing fourth. The girls scored 99 points and the boys had 102. Battle Mountain won both divisions with scores of 23 and 25, respectively.

In girls' competition, Delta's Mykayla Music was the first Delta County runner to cross the finish line with a time of 20:05.41.

Other Delta runners included Beki Atchley (29th), Abbi Beckwith (30th) and Ahna Richards (53rd).

Hotchkiss' Kaiya Firor was the 17th placer in the girls' race with a time of 20:35.68. Mariah Griffith was the next Bulldog runner, who finished 54th.

On the boys' side, Delta's John Ames continues to improve his times and finished with a time of 17:27.51 to place 12th overall.

Other Delta runners, and places, included Wade Stinson (24th-17:57.68), Elias Carlson (28th-18:10.63) and Logan Freed (33rd-18:33.11).

Hotchkiss' Sam Rodriguez finished in 17th place with a good time of 17:40.82. Owen Mattison finished 53rd and Miles Zoutte was 76th.

Paonia's Caden Meilner had a time of 18:15.95 to place 31st.

Delta's Ames is coming on fast as the regular season nears its conclusion. When asked what it will take to get to state, Ames' comment was, "Something in the 17s will work."

Ames has shown big improvement since the beginning of the season. He began the season with a time in the 19:10 range. His time on Friday was nearly two minutes faster.

Hotchkiss' Sam Rodriguez is also steadily improving as the season nears the end. With regionals, in Delta, rapidly approaching, Rodriguez notes a need to relax before that race. "The Montrose Relays are next for us and it is a fun race that doesn't really have that much impact on us." Rodriguez also sees times in the 17 minute frame as a key ingredient for reaching state competition.

Area cross country teams are scheduled to participate in the Montrose Relays on Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning at 10 a.m.

Regional competition is scheduled for Delta's Confluence Park on Oct. 23. Races begin at 1 p.m.
