Meeker's Cowboys share the top of 1A WSL football standings with Paonia after their 42-14 win in Cedaredge. Each have a 7-0 overall record and 3-0 league marks. The Bruins fell to 1-2 in league play and are now 5-2 overall.

Meeker's Logan Hughes, a junior, leads the league with 1023 passing yards. Against the Bruins, Hughes, unofficially, threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns as the Cowboys scored five times in the middle quarters to put the game away.

Hunter Garcia scored twice on passes (from Hughes) of 40 and 13 yards. Casey Turner (73-yard pass from Hughes), Sheridan Harvey (7-yard pass from Hughes), Doak Mantle (10-yard run) and Cole Brown (40-yard interception return) accounted for Meeker's remaining four scores.

The Cowboys scored a trio of 2-point conversions in the game.

Meeker scored the game's first touchdown on its second possession. A Hughes' completion to Garcia covered the final 40 yards of a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Doak Mantle converted the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 Cowboys' lead with 4:08 left in the first quarter.

The Bruins began their ensuing drive on the Meeker 35-yard line. A mixture of pass and running plays produced Cedaredge's first score 14 plays later. Sophomore Jared Reynolds powered his way the final yard with 9:53 left in the first half of action. A 2-point extra-point try by Brandon O'Hern failed leaving the Cowboys on top 8-6.

Meeker wasted no time finding the end zone following the Bruins' score. On the Cowboys' third play Hughes completed a short pass to Casey Turner for a catch and run play covering 73 yards for the score. Hughes' pass attempt to Cole Brown was broken up leaving Meeker ahead 14-6 with 8:43 left before halftime.

Cedaredge began its next drive on its own 20-yard line and had moved the ball to Meeker's 49 where Pedro Madaleno fumbled the ball and Hughes was able to secure the ball for the Cowboys at the Bruins' 44.

Four plays later, Hughes connected with Harvey for his 7-yard touchdown pass. Hughes ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion giving the Cowboys a 22-6 lead with 4:44 left until halftime.

Another fumble by the Bruins gave the ball back to Meeker on the first play of Cedaredge's next possession.

From the Bruins' 30-yard line, Meeker used three plays, culminating with Mantle's 10-yard run for six more points. Hughes' 2-point conversion pass to Garcia gave the Cowboys a 30-6 lead with 3:08 left in the period.

The Bruins escaped falling farther behind after a Jared Reynolds pass was picked off by Garcia. The Cowboys gave the ball back to Cedaredge on a Hughes' punt allowing the Bruins to finish the half.

Cedaredge had the ball first following halftime and fumbled the ball on its second play from scrimmage. Hughes' recovery set the Cowboys up on the Bruins' 25-yard line.

The Bruins took over on loss of downs at their own 23 to begin a new set of downs. The turnover-bug continued for Cedaredge when Madaleno's second pass of the possession was picked off by Brown and returned 40 yards for a score. Turner's 2-point try failed leaving the Cowboys in front 36-6 with 5:56 left in the third quarter.

Cedaredge couldn't keep the ball secure on its next possession with Jared Reynold's second pass being pilfered by Mantle to start Meeker's next possession at the Bruins' 21. A false start set the ball back to the 26. From there, Garcia caught two 13-yard passes in succession to score Meeker's final touchdown with 3:59 left in the third quarter. Mantle's 2-point try failed and Meeker had a 42-6 lead.

Madaleno's fumble recovery in the fourth quarter set up Cedaredge's final score on a drive beginning at the Cowboys' 35-yard line. Drew Markley hauled in a Madaleno 24-yard scoring toss with 1:16 left in the game. Isaac Swoffer's 2-point conversion made the final score 42-14.

Madaleno completed 11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and one interception while Jared Reynolds was four-for-12 with 51 yards and two interceptions. The two quarterbacks combined for 156 yards.

Swoffer was the leading ground-gainer for the Bruins with 16 carries and 47 yards. Madaleno had 36 yards on nine carries with Jared Reynolds rushing for 20 yards on six carries and a touchdown. In all, the Bruins had 105 yards on 34 rushes to go with the 156 yards through the air for a combined 261 yards on offense.

Tre' Labossiere paced Cedaredge's defense with seven tackles while Chris Lindley, Swoffer and O'Hern had five tackles each.

The Bruins are in Parachute this week to face the Grand Valley Cardinals (2-1 and 5-2), a 36-19 winner over Hotchkiss (0-3 and 3-4) last week. Friday's game in Parachute is 7 p.m.

Meeker plays host to Paonia this week, with the winner taking sole possession of first place.
