In August 2017, the Delta County Sheriff's Office opened an investigation into Richard Taylor, 49, for failing to register as a sex offender and being a convicted felon in possession of weapons. The case was filed with the Seventh Judicial District Attorney's Office.
In February 2018, another investigation was opened on Taylor for two additional counts of possession of firearms. This case was also filed with the DA's office. It was also believed at this time that Taylor was traveling and living between Delta County and the Denver area. The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) was contacted and agreed to assume these cases.
On April 13, the Delta County Sheriff's Office assisted ATF execute search and arrest warrants for Taylor and his residence of 43142 Needle Rock Road in Crawford. Taylor was taken into federal custody and additional firearms and ammunition were seized.
During a preliminary hearing in Delta District Court on Tuesday, Jan. 15, Judge Steven Schultz found probable cause for second degree murder charges against Heather Jones.
Jones previously faced three counts in the shooting of Ryan Redifer in Paonia on Jan. 12, 2018 -- assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree and violation of a protection order.
