Recently I received my 20th full color campaign flyer from the campaign for Olen Lund for Senate District 5. As I leafed through my sizable collection of Lund material, I also noted that nine of the 20 were negative attack ads aimed at Olen's opponent, Kerry Donovan.
I know Olen Lund, and the multi-million dollar dark money backing that he has secured, is a situation that should alarm us all. For two years, I sat across the Delta Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) board table from Mr. Lund. Time after time, when presented with new opportunities, Olen always voted NO. He was strongly opposed to DMEA embarking on a broadband services program, opposed to DMEA seeking lower cost power supply options and in general opposed to any change at all. I quickly learned that Olen lacks the intellectual curiosity to probe issues to understand their ramifications, both good and bad. He will without question, cheerily follow the direction of his distant handlers and do their bidding no matter what the cost to our local communities.
It is also interesting to note that Olen has been an almost invisible campaigner. He is purely relying on a dark and remote campaign engine to manage every detail of this process for him. This is another example of his low energy and lack of a set of strong core principals, as well as his unwillingness to engage with the community around him.
On the other hand, Kerry Donovan stands in stark contrast to Mr. Lund. She is visible and highly supportive of key Western Slope issues. As an example, earlier this year, DMEA identified some critical changes that were needed to SB18-002, a bill addressing financing of rural broadband deployment. Kerry was instrumental in assisting DMEA in getting key amendments incorporated in this bill that made it more impactful for rural communities. Without her support, this bill would have been far less beneficial. Please join me in celebrating our strong reputation for western independence by keeping this dark money out of our local political system. I urge you all to vote for Kerry Donovan for Senate District 5.
