The Paonia boys basketball team suffered a 66-36 loss last Wednesday to the visiting De Beque Dragons. At 14-0, De Beque is currently third in state 1A RPI rankings.

Senior David Lozano scored two three-pointers and 12 points for the game. Jose Pentajo managed four goals and eight points, Elan Maulhardt scored four, and Jai Petmezas and Logan Green each scored a three-pointer.

The Eagles had a hard time stopping sophomores Wes Ryan and Brennan Rigsby, who scored 26 and 17 points, respectively.

With five games remaining in the season, the loss gives the Eagles a 5-2 conference and 8-5 overall win-loss record. Paonia travels to North Park (1-11) Friday and faces Soroco (7-7) at Oak Creek Saturday.

While having one senior and four juniors on the Eagle girls varsity squad, season play continues to take a toll on their win-loss record, as players continue to hone their skills and learn the game.

The Eagles had single-digit scores in all four periods in their 43-18 loss to De Beque.

In her sixth game of the season, sophomore Taneal Mautz made 67 percent of her field goal shots including two three-pointers and scored a team-high 10 points. Junior post Lyla Hayutin-Baril scored four points, and sophomores Ceylon Carter scored three and Sadie Lee added a free throw. Paonia shot 2 of 11 from the foul line.

The De Beque defense dominated the game. Paonia had three offensive rebounds and 28 turnovers for the game. The Eagle defense finished the game with 18 rebounds.

Led by seniors Faith Novess, Jentry Largent and Nataly Castro, the Dragon girls are 11-3 overall and in ninth place in state 1A RPI rankings.

Paonia is 2-4 in the 2A/1A Western Slope Conference with five games remaining in the season. It takes to the road this week to face 9-3 North Park Friday and 12-2 Soroco Saturday.
