Delta's 50/70 Intermediate All-Star baseball team is on its way to the next level, state tournament play, in Thornton at Northern Lights Little League Fields on July 11. Delta's opponent is undetermined at this time as tournaments begin on Friday in the metro region.

The all-stars were competing with Grand Junction's Grand Mesa intermediates for the right to represent District 1 at state in Denver.

The numbers 50/70 refers to the distance from the pitchers mound to home plate (50 feet) and the distance between bases (70 feet).

Delta won the two-game series with victories on June 28, 17-5, and June 29, 12-10. Both games were played at Delta's Mountain View Park and Ball Fields. City of Delta/Bill Heddles Recreation Center sports coordinator Whitnee Lear noted the games were played in Delta following a request for the games to be played in Delta.

This year's games were both a wild one-sided affair and a hanging on for dear life ordeal in game two on Saturday.

Eban Ficklin breezed through the visiting Grand Mesa's lineup in Friday's game limiting them to five runs on six hits with eight strike outs during the five-inning contest.

Delta broke open a close game in the third inning to take a 10-5 lead with an eight-run frame which included a Darris Kropf inside-the-park home run.

Delta's offense was paced by four hits from Bryson Inda, including a triple in the fourth inning.

Joe Black, Caleb Weams, and Ficklin contributed two hits each in Delta's win with Davion Lopez and Nate Brewer scoring three times for the winners.

Game two on Saturday was close for the first four innings with Delta holding a 4-3 lead. Delta sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth inning and came away with six runs to build what appeared to be an untouchable 10-3 lead. Grand Mesa refused to go away and countered with four runs in its own extended sixth inning where 10 batters patterned a trail to the plate. Delta pitching allowed six walks in the frame and kept fans in both camps sitting on the edge of their seats as Delta took a 10-7 lead to the seventh frame.

Delta stretched its lead to 12-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Grand Mesa kept the pressure on to the end with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to come up short in a 12-10 Delta win.

Andric Sanchez and Weams were Delta's batting leaders with 2-4 days at the plate and two RBI each.

Grand Mesa's Joren Ashcraft finished the day with three hits in four at bats and three RBIs.
