There were 17 boys track teams that participated in last weekend's Hotchkiss Invitational track meet hosted by Delta High School. The Hotchkiss facility, following repairs, is expected to be ready for use sometime this summer.

Montrose won the boys title with 150 points with Cedaredge placing second (101), Delta and Coal Ridge tied for third (90), Hotchkiss fifth (49) and Paonia sixth (45). The Indians recorded four first-place finishes (400m, 800m 4x800m relay and 3200m). Delta and Coal Ridge placed first in three events.

Delta's top finishes were in the 110 meter high hurdles on Beau Byers' 16.44 time. Byers was a double winner in the meet with his 40' 3.5" the best of the day in triple jump. The Panthers' 1600m relay (Byers, Logan Freed, Tre Johnson and Jacob Wear) logged the third win with a time of 3:41.34.

Byers, a senior, is participating in track after missing most of his high school years. He has won the 110m high hurdles the first two meets of the season. "I tried running the hurdles during a practice and coach (Matt Kevan) saw me and asked if I wanted to run them ... I said okay." Byers is quick to point out his form isn't right yet but knows it's a matter of time before he improves. "I just need more time over the hurdles to understand what is needed to get better."

Byers has top-five finishes in high jump the last two meets and is working hard to fix his technique flaws.

The Panthers earned second-place finishes in the 100m dash (AB Ontiveros, 11.77), 4x100 meter relay (Jason Kaighn, David Mora, Ontiveros and Tanner Webster - 45.62) and the 3200m run by John Ames' in a time of 10:55.54.

Wear picked up a third place in the 800m run (2:09.77) and the 3200 meter relay team (Freed, Johnson, Syni Lujan and Wear - 8:40.95).

Delta's second 400 meter relay team (Luka Htoo, Reyes Meraz, Kula Moo and Jw Tindall - 46.77) placed fourth.

David Mora placed fifth in the 200m dash with Johnson placing sixth in the 400m dash.

Seventh place finishes went to Eh Doh Htoo (400m dash), Garrison Paniagua (3200m run), the 800 meter sprint medley (Evan Baier, Dustin Bravo, Lionel Pizano and Blake Naranjo), Noah Higgs (long jump) and Cameron Schall (shot put).

Mora finished eighth in the 100m dash.

Delta's 4x200 meter relay was disqualified, preventing the Panthers from earning more points.
