Central High School in Grand Junction held its yearly Warrior Classic last weekend, the biggest early-season wrestling meet in Colorado.

Forty teams from three different states competed in the event, which draws the best wrestlers in every classification and serves as a pretty good preview of the state tournament in February.

The schools from Delta County were well represented in the semifinal and final matches last Saturday.

Leading the way was Delta wrestler Logan Church, who won the individual title in the heavyweight class. Church pinned Sam Distel of Montrose in the finals to win the championship.

Senior Kole Roberts had a fine tournament for the Panthers as well, getting to the semifinals in the very competitive 145 pound division. Roberts was turned away in the semis by Fruita Monument standout Daniel Van Hoose, who won a 16-2 major decision.

Overall, Delta compiled 111 team points at the Warrior and finished tied for 11th with defending state champion Meeker.

Cedaredge saw senior Tre LaBossiere continue his strong start to the season when he reached the finals in the 195 pound class.

LaBossiere fell to defending state champion Trent Schultz of Mountain Vista in the final match.

The Bruins totaled 109.5 team points at the Warrior to finish 13th in the final standings.

The Hotchkiss Bulldogs got strong performances from several wrestlers in the tournament and finished nineth as a team with 126.5 points.

Hotchkiss sophomore Sergio Campos got to the semifinals at the Warrior before getting pinned by eventual champion Jace Trujillo of Pueblo East.

Bulldogs senior Wade Katzdorn capped his outstanding effort in the tournament with a second-place finish at 160 pounds. Katzdorn was on the short side of an 11-6 decision against Peter Isais of Pine Creek in the finals.

The Paonia Eagles put up a strong effort at the Warrior, piling up 128.5 team points and finishing sixth overall.

Senior Gabe Ferguson had the highlight performance of the weekend for Paonia, reaching the finals in the 120-pound weight class. Ferguson was pinned in the finals by Andrew Lucero of Pueblo East.

Paonia junior Jaden Miller got to the semifinals in the 182-pound class before being pinned by Palisade's Terrence Williams.

Eagles senior Trevor Smith got to the finals in the 220-pound class and finished second after being pinned by Jordan Tucker of Green River, Utah.

Grand Junction won the team title at the Warrior with 242.5 points.

Area wrestling teams are now on Christmas break and will return to the mats a week into the New Year.
