About a month ago, Delta resident Will Secrest bought a five-ton truck in Texas -- a behemoth he planned to use to haul hay, move animals and even hook a plow up to.

The camouflage green open bed truck was originally used by the Louisiana National Guard. It was later donated to a JROTC program and eventually retired.

When Will and his wife Hanni saw the devastation left in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, they decided the truck should head back south. They gathered up donations of bottled water, dog food, water filters, rain gear and non-perishable items from Walmart shoppers and headed out the afternoon of Aug. 30. After delivering the supplies, they planned to hook up with the Cajun Navy and offer use of the retired military truck to transport people and animals left homeless by flood waters in Texas and Louisiana.

Wikipedia describes the Cajun Navy as an informal ad-hoc volunteer group composed of private boat owners who assist in search and rescue efforts in Louisiana and adjacent areas.

The Secrests do not have family in the area -- they just saw a need and felt compelled to do what they could to help.

"We can fit a lot of people in this truck," they said. With six oversized tires, the truck can tackle all types of terrain -- even record-breaking flood waters.

Donations are being accepted on their gofundme page, "Getting the 5 ton to Texas." The funds will be used for gas to and from Texas, and for snacks and bottled water for the victims they hope to rescue.
