With a week left in regular season play Delta's Panthers are resting in fourth place in 3A WSL girls standings.
Last week's loss to Cedaredge, 39-36, and a win in Carbondale, 53-36, leaves the Panthers with a 5-2 league mark and 12-5 overall.
The Bruins, 6-1 and 13-4, landed in second place after wins over the Panthers, Vail Christian and Aspen.
Bruins 39, Delta 36
A very close game through four quarters indicated the effort from each team. Cedaredge found themselves trailing 13-12 after one quarter and held a 20-18 lead at halftime.
Each team scored three points in the third quarter as defense dictated game tempo.
Makayla McKinney stole the show in the fourth quarter for the Bruins. Delta held an early lead in the frame before McKinney erupted for all 11 of her team-high points. She canned three 3's and a common goal to lead a come-from-behind effort that produced the three-point win.
Hannah Gilmore finished the game for Cedaredge with eight points.
Delta's Emily Baier scored eight points in the final stanza as she tried to match McKinney's efforts. Baier finished with 15 points to lead all scorers in the game and Emily Nortnik had eight for the Panthers.
A stifling Bruins' defense, and turnovers by the Panthers' offense, enabled Cedaredge an opportunity to win the junior varsity game 28-19.
Delta 53, Rams 36
Delta had some of its zip back after a loss to Cedaredge earlier in the week.
Emily Nortnik's 19 points more than made up for a lackluster scoring day against Cedaredge. Nortnik seemed to have a funnel right to her low post position. She had three easy put-ins in the first quarter helping Delta gain a 14-6 advantage.
Nortnik took a break in the second quarter, with foul trouble looming, and Emily Baier took over by scoring six of nine points for the Panthers in the period. Delta owned a 23-14 halftime lead.
Balanced scoring, and some good defensive work, boosted Delta's lead to 35-20 heading into the final quarter.
Nortnik was dominate in the fourth period with 12 points which helped stretch the Panthers' winning margin to 53-36.
Delta finishes the regular season with Moffat County's Bulldogs this Friday, in Craig, at 6 p.m. and plays host to Grand Valley on Saturday at 4 p.m.
