To be part of a winning team is something I have always wanted, and this last week, Delta High School got to celebrate having two: both the boys' and girls' basketball teams advanced to the state tournament. It is an achievement worthy of pride for sure. But the winning team that I would like to celebrate as I write today is not the group I was blessed enough to coach. The team I want to thank is this community: the parents who have raised such wonderful young men, the student body and people from all over who packed our gym for the regional championship games, the band who played their hearts out, the student section who have never been more rowdy or important for our home contests, the administration who supported us, the volunteer fire department who escorted us out of town, Mrs. Magner from LES and Mr. Mock from GMES and all the elementary kids who made us signs and sent us off, the businesses who generously donated, supported and supplied us along the way, a bus driver who could navigate through any avalanche or downtown traffic jam, and all the others I have surely forgotten to mention here. You all are the team I am grateful for.
Winning basketball games -- or any game for that matter -- is easy when you are surrounded by such fantastic winners in this community. Thank you to everyone who came out and watched, screamed, donated or pulled for the Delta Panthers basketball teams this year. It was a bunch of fun. GO BIG GREEN.
