The 3A WSL softball league sent four teams into regional competition this past weekend. Only Delta achieved a chance to host. The Panthers were seeded third and hosted play in Region 3 with No. 14 Cortez and No. 19 Peak to Peak.
Both Delta, as the regional champion, and Cortez, as a state qualifier move on.
Meeker entered the weekend as a number 9 team in Region 8 in Limon. The Badgers hosted with their 15-8 record with No. 24 Sheridan (9-13) and Meeker (13-9) playing the opening game. Meeker trounced Sheridan 21-4 and moved on to face Limon. In a tight game, Limon came away with a 10-8 win, sending both teams to Aurora this next weekend.
Cedaredge (9-13) was the WSL's fourth team in regional play. The Bruins traveled to Faith Christian (Denver) where the No. 21 team faced No. 12 Ft. Lupton (14-8) Saturday morning. Unfortunately, Terry Montoya's Bruins were unable to stay with the Bluedevils and were eliminated from further play by an 8-0 score. Cedaredge ended its season with a 9-14 record.
The 3A state softball pairings were released late Monday morning and Delta (20-2) kept its No. 3 ranking and will face No. 19 Sterling (12-12) at 12:15 Oct. 19 at the Aurora Softball Complex.
Meeker (14-10), comes in at No. 11 and will play No. 6 Lamar (17-7) at 12:15 on Oct. 19. Cortez was the next to last team in this year's tournament and is seeded 15th with a 13-9 record and takes on No. 2 Eaton (19-5) the same day and time. Losers of the 12:15 games are eliminated and winners advance to the quarterfinal round, also to be played on Oct. 19. The winners in quarterfinal action move on to Saturday, Oct. 20 for the semifinal and final rounds.
All divisions of softball, 5A, 4A and 3A will play at Denver's Aurora Sports Complex this coming weekend.
