First and above all, congratulations to both the Delta High School boys and girls basketball teams on earning berths in the state tournament. By the time this makes it to the public we will hopefully have two state championship teams to celebrate.
Now down to less pleasant, but necessary business. The first paragraph of the story about the boys earning a trip to state contains a couple of inaccuracies. The first is that the last trip to a state basketball tournament for the boys was in the late 1970s. My 11 teammates who played with me in the 1984 state tournament (several of whom still also live in the Delta area) and I would respectfully disagree. It was my junior year at DHS. At that time every team was guaranteed three games in the tournament. We lost to Florence, beat Centauri, and lost to Fountain/Fort Carson to place sixth. All of our games were played at the old Auditorium Arena in downtown Denver, which was torn down a few years later to make way for the Colorado Convention Center.
The second inaccuracy is that no DHS teams have made it to the Elite 8 since the 1940s. If I am not mistaken, both the 1978 and 1979 DHS boys teams played in the Elite 8, although at that time it was simply referred to as the state tournament. And again, my team in 1984 played in the Elite 8 -- this I know for a fact because I was there. Not exactly of earth-shaking importance, I suppose, but I just wanted to set the record straight.
One final note, a little family history. My brother Gregg played on the 1978 and 1979 teams. I played on the 1984 team. His daughter and my niece, Erika, plays on the 2019 girls team. Go Erika and GO BIG GREEN!
