Delta Senior Center offers many benefits

Dear Editor:

A friend of mine suggested for me to eat at the Delta Senior Center and I tried it. Now I know all the benefits I am receiving from that and want to share that invitation with all of you in this community or elsewhere.

There is a menu for the month, so helpful for picky eaters like many of us. Personally, I go daily because there is always something I like from the daily variety served. Meals are healthy and filling. Many people take some home for the evening because they fill your tray abundantly. I usually ask for a little less. People often come back for more so they can have it for later. Yeah, no cooking or planning for that day!

For those of you who have lived here many years, you will see people you know and want to chat with. That is another benefit many of us overlook. We need to be with people rather than hole up alone and slave over a meal which usually ends up frozen. Not healthy as a steady diet. There is no way that we can get the daily variety they serve without wasting much food and having leftovers for days. Open up a can of beets or peas for yourself and eat it for days. We usually have to throw it out since we are tired of it.

There is no seating assignment and you have the choice but I notice that people often find newly-made friends to sit by. Some stay to visit or visit the store where you can get amazing deals. Friends actually ask, "Where did you get that?" You usually volunteer proudly the cost of the article because it is like it was given to you for free. What a deal.

Stores often donate produce, bread, desserts, etc. It is amazing. Drinks include milk, buttermilk, tea, coffee and of course, cold water. What about the cost of all this abundance? Where can you get all this for just $3? Oh, and did you know they serve those who need that help? Just remain seated and a tray arrives. You are amazed at those volunteers who refuse to give in to their own needs but do their work with a smile.

There is one thing that frightens me and that is how poorly attended the place is considering all the benefits. I do hope people will come more often because I would hate to see that place close down even if it is just for a few days. What a loss that would be.
