The 2016 high school baseball season is underway. Delta's Panthers hosted their annual baseball tournament, with three teams joining the Panthers in a two-day tournament. Bear Creek (Class 5A) and Fort Morgan High School (Class 4A) were two Colorado participants in last weekend's tournament action. The Emery Spartans, out of Castle Dale, Utah, are a Class 2A team sporting a 1-3 record in early season play.

Bear Creek was the early leader against the Panthers on Friday afternoon after a 6-1 lead in two innings of play. The Bears went on to score a 10-4 decision.

Delta's first Saturday opponent, Fort Morgan, led 3-1 before the Panthers scored six runs in the fourth inning, which propelled them to a 10-7 win.

The last game, on Saturday, pitted Emery against the Panthers. Delta scored in each of the four innings it batted in and scored a 15-5 victory.

BC 10, Delta 4

The Bears were hungry and a five-run first inning set the table for what played out to be an easy win.

Delta closed the gap to 6-4 after four innings of play before the Bears took charge of the game for good with a three-run fifth frame and a 9-4 lead.

Blake Reiher, Ty McCurdy and Tristan Brown had the three Delta hits in the game. Christian Hep had two doubles in his three-hit day for the Bears and teammate Thomas Martinez was 3-5 for the winners.

Bear Creek's Cole Carey was the winning pitcher while Ethan Keller took the loss for Delta.

Delta 10, Mustangs 7

The Panthers bounced back on Saturday to win their first game of the day, 10-7, over Fort Morgan.

The Mustangs gave Delta, and its fans, a bit to worry about by taking a 2-1 lead to the second inning.

After two scoreless innings, Fort Morgan plated its third run, extending its lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning. The Panthers responded in their half of the inning with six runs and a 7-3 lead.

Another two runs by the Mustang's offense in the fifth inning shaved Delta's lead to 7-5.

Delta's offense produced three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and a defensive stand by the Panthers in the top of the seventh allowed just two runs in a comeback effort by the Mustangs.

Jaspar Carmichael had three hits, including two doubles, to lead Delta's offense. McCurdy had two hits and Josh Reeder a hit that produced two RBIs for the winners.

Fort Morgan's Nate Kage was 3-4 with the bat and had three RBIs, including two home runs, for the Mustangs.

Carmichael (1-0) was the winning pitcher and Jason Wiges (0-1) picked up the loss.

Delta 15, Emery 5

The Panthers wasted little time scoring runs against Emery, with five in the first and two more in the second, to take a 7-0.

Emery knocked in a pair of runs in the third inning and another three in the fourth but still trailed 9-5 after the Panthers plated singletons in each of the third and fourth frames.

Six runs in the bottom of the fifth ended the game via the 10-run rule, 15-5.

Seth Mewhinney had a three-for-three day with a run knocked in, and Carmichael had a day to remember with three hits, including a triple and a home run and three RBIs. Justin Violett was also productive with three hits, three RBIs, two home runs and two runs scored.

Drake Horn was the winning pitcher (1-0) with four innings worked, eight hits allowed and five runs given up. Easton Metcalf worked one inning for the Panthers and gave up two hits.

Delta's next diamond action is against Montrose, in Delta, at 3 p.m. on March 22.
