Delta High School's baseball team has won six of its last eight games and are leading the 3A WSL standings with a 7-2 record.
Alamosa and Mountain View are the only teams to have defeated the Panthers so far this season. Delta avenged its loss to Alamosa a week ago at the St. Mary's tournament and added a 4-1 win over surprisingly tough Montezuma-Cortez this past week and now owns a four-game winning streak.
Cortez came into last week's game with Delta sporting a 4-1 record. The host Panthers fell behind in the fourth inning, 1-0, but picked up a single run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
Delta got its offense going in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run spurt that proved to be the difference in a 4-1 win for the Panthers.
Andrew Baier had three hits, with two doubles, and an RBI to lead Delta's offense. Trevor Myers had two hits and Nolan Bynum a single to account for Delta's six hits in the game. Cortez batters had just three hits in the game (all singles).
Baier started the game on the hill and worked four innings allowing three hits and one run while walking two batters and striking out six. Eli Farmer came on to finish the game with three innings of work keeping Cortez hitless and striking out seven to earn the win.
Delta played Rifle April 2 and plays in Durango April 5 at 5 p.m. The Panthers travel to Carbondale to face Roaring Fork, April 11, at 4 p.m.
