Delta wins fourth straight title

Last week's baseball action produced another WSL title in Class 3A. In all, counting the 14-0 season in 2016 in the 4A WSL, Delta now owns its fourth straight league title and can now boast about another milestone record of 41 consecutive wins in league play. The Panthers have now won three league titles in 3A WSL with 9-0 marks and have a 14-0 league record in WSL 4A play.

For Delta coach Steve Reiher, "It's all about playing to their potential now," as the Panthers head into regional playoffs. With the wins last week, Delta sits atop the 3A WSL with a 9-0 league mark and touts an 18-4 overall record with just one non-conference game with Montrose (played Monday afternoon) left to play before playoff pairings and sites are announced.

The Panthers began last week with an 11-1 win over visiting Olathe.A Friday game in Silt with Coal Ridge was a 10-3 win, giving the Panthers their 41st straight league win. Last Saturday's non-conference game against Montrose was postponed until Monday afternoon.

Against Olathe, the Pirates were held hitless until junior Jonathan Bollinger's double in the top of the seventh scored Leif Nelson, who had walked earlier. Delta starter, Gauge Lockhart, issued one other walk in the game in his four innings of work where he completely stymied the Pirates and struck out nine batters. Senior Eli Farmer pitched the final inning to give up one hit, two walks, one run and struck out three. Lockhart's record is 2-1 for the season.

Dayton Sofka (1-1) took the loss for Olathe.

Senior Trevor Myers led Delta's 10-hit attack with his sixth home run in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-RBI day. Other 2-RBI games came from Farmer, who had two hits (one a double) and Nolan Bynum's 1-3 day.

Andrew Baier, Lockhart and Rowyn Carmichael contributed an RBI each in Delta's win.

Friday's game with Coal Ridge (2-7 and 9-14) took shape as a pending struggle as the Titans refused to go down without a struggle.

An early 2-0 lead for Coal Ridge turned into a 3-2 advantage for the Panthers after two innings of play.

Delta added runs in the third and fourth innings with the Titans tacking on their final run in the third.

Delta continued to build its lead with two runs in the sixth and three more insurance runs in the seventh to post its ninth win of the season against no losses in league play.

Nate Workman was Delta's RBI leader with three with Bynum, Farmer, Kolby Keller and Colby Wilson hitting doubles for the Panthers. Bynum and Farmer had 2 RBIs each in the run production while Keller and Wilson had an RBI each.

The Panthers stole eight of the nine bases attempted in the game with Workman and Myers swiping two each.

Jackson Wade had a double and an RBI to lead Coal Ridge with Ryan Kotz and Colby Bilson collecting the other two RBIs for the Titans.

Clayton Abila (5-0) was the winning pitcher with 6.2 innings of work where he gave up two hits, one run, walked three and struck out 12 batters.

The Panthers will enter this week's pairings as Class 3As No. 7 RPI team with an 19-4 record.
