Delta's Panthers were on the mat twice this past week, plus had a female wrestler, Makayla Mills, participate in an eastern slope meet just for girls.
Delta hosted Palisade's Bulldogs on Jan. 12 and were defeated 45-33. The Panthers traveled across the mountains to take part in the Mel Smith 2017 Florence Wrestling Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Five wrestlers placed in the top six for the Panthers.
The Panthers hosted a Pee Wee match between the junior varsity and varsity matches.
Delta's pee wee contingent consisted of 37 wrestlers, who either competed against similar weight for Palisade's youngsters, or wrestled their own teammates for purposes of all attending the meet would have a match.
For Delta 285-pounder Logan Church (24-1) the trip over to the eastern slope cost him his undefeated season as he lost to Mullen's Sam DeSeriere (20-0) by a 2-1 decision. Delta coach Clayton Curtis noted earlier in the week that Church would have his hands full with a state contender from a year ago.
On the girls' side of wrestling, Mills won three of five matches to place fifth at the Frederick Warrior Invitational.
Palisade 45, Delta 33
Palisade had enough bodies to fill all 13 slots in the match and earned 12 points on forfeit wins at 182 and 220.
The match began with action in the 145-pound division featuring the Bulldogs' Austin Bernal and Delta's Kole Roberts. When the final horn had sounded, Bernal had picked up a hard fought 5-1 decision.
Delta took a 15-3 lead on pins by Chance Dillingham (152) and Drake Horn (160) for an early advantage.
Palisade was more than ready for the next four matches as it picked up six points in each of the next four bouts. Isaac Maestas pinned Aiden Barrios (170), Joe Medrano won by forfeit at 182, Terrance Williams pinned Sam Komives and Wes Buford was a forfeit winner at 195.
Church's pin over Ricardo Valenzuela at 285 stopped the win streak.
Palisade's 106-pounder Jagger Wade started the lower weight bouts with a pin over the Panthers' Tee Kee.
At 113 Delta's Logan Mayberry picked up a forfeit win. Raul Inchauregui scored another pinfall for the Bulldogs over Tha Deh in the 120-pound match.
Ayden Tucker notched a pinfall over Palisade's Cobe Clark at 126 and Kylar Massano scored an 8-4 decision over Dillon Abeyta to close out Delta's scoring for the match.
Palisade's Gage Nettleblad put an exclamation point on the Bulldogs' evening with a pin against Roger Burns at 138.
Mel Smith Invitational
This wrestling tournament attracted 38 teams with 32 of them scoring points. Cheyenne Mountain collected 177 points to win the team title. Delta tied for eighth with Buena Vista with 99 points.
The highest placing wrestler for the Panthers was Logan Church at 285.
The Delta junior rolled through the early rounds, bringing a 22-0 record with him. A loss to Sam DeSeriere (20-0) ended Church's perfect season, but the 2-1 loss added determination to his resolve to complete the tournament.
Church defeated Sheridan's Ricky Ayala, 4-2, in the consolation semifinals making it possible for him to wrestle for third place against Manitou Springs' Julian Sanchez. Church had enough energy left to outscore Sanchez 3-1 for the third-place title.
Kole Roberts (145) and Chance Dillinghame (152) placed fifth in the huge tournament.
Roberts (15-8) won his first two matches but lost in quarterfinals. He won the next two matches but lost his bid for third place with a loss in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. A 54 second pinfall in the fifth place match handed him the fifth place finish.
Dillingham (21-6) rolled through the 152-pound division until reaching the semifinal round. A loss in the consolation semifinal round landed him in the fifth place match.
Drake Horn and Aiden Barrios placed sixth at Florence. Horn (15-13) lost his second match of the tournament and then won his next four bouts in the consolation bracket. A loss to Olathe's Caleb Jolley (25-6) sent Horn to the fifth place match where he was defeated.
Barrios' run in Florence began with a win in the first round. A loss to Faustin Lopez in the second round sent him to the consolation bracket. The two wrestlers would meet again, in the semifinal round of consolation action, with Lopez knocking Barrios out of the third place match and into the fifth place bout where he lost.
The Pirates' Andrew Godfrey was the best of the field at 126 and placed first. Jolley finished third in the 160-pound division.
The Delta Panthers are in Montrose Jan. 20 for matches beginning at 5 p.m. A trip to Rifle on Saturday, Jan. 21, will keep the Panthers busy competing in a series of dual meets throughout the day.
