Scott Schaible leaves out an interesting sentence in the Colorado School Safety Resource Center (CSSRC) document that he references in his most recent letter to the editor.
Titled "What Parents Need to Know," the CSSRC fact sheet does indeed lay out some alarming facts about the dangers of underage marijuana consumption. It also provides best practices and useful tips for parents on how to talk to their kids about marijuana use.
The fact sheet then references a similar online resource that parents can use to address underage alcohol consumption. The report states, "The tool can be used to help prevent underage marijuana use in Colorado as well since it is a substance that is legal for adults but not youth to use." This underage alcohol website also lays out the similar dangers of underage drinking and provides similar tips for parents.
This reference to underage drinking got me thinking. If opponents of marijuana want to be logically and philosophically consistent, then there is another cause they need to champion: ban all liquor stores and bars in Delta. Having these establishments in near proximity to our children is putting them at risk to the dangers of alcohol addiction. Furthermore, any tax revenue collected from these establishments is, simply put, "blood money."
So come on folks -- let's jump start the temperance movement all over again. Let's fight to reinstate the 18th Amendment. Let's bring back the good ol' days of Prohibition -- that illustrious past of bathtub gin, moonshiners, and violent mobsters. The safety and well being of our children are depending on us to repeat history.
Or, perhaps, we should realize that our double standards regarding alcohol and marijuana are ridiculous and hypocritical. All sarcasm aside, our children are only at risk if we don't act like adults and teach them how to be responsible.
The true issue at hand -- and what City of Delta voters will decide on Nov. 6 -- is whether we actually believe in a free marketplace or not. Marijuana prohibitionists apparently do not.
