Paonia takes a 15-0 overall record into the week following two five-inning wins at Meeker Saturday.
The undefeated Eagles opened with a 14-3 conference win over the Cowboys. Meeker (10-5 overall, 2-2 in 2A District 3/5) had five hits and three RBIs in the loss.
In their 13-1 win in game two, the Eagles took an early five-run lead and scored five runs in the fifth to end the game in five innings. Dagan Rienks was four for four with three runs and three RBIs, Colby Simpson and Alex Lozano were three for four, and Trevor Smith was two for four and hit a late-game three-run homer. Paonia batters had no strike-outs for the game.
On the mound Smith struck out seven, allowed three hits and one earned run in five innings.
With three games remaining in the regular season, Paonia is one of two undefeated teams in Class 2A, and one of two teams to remain undefeated in District 3/5.
They play a two-game series against rival Hotchkiss (12-2 overall, 5-0, District 3/5) this week. After 14 games, Hotchkiss has outscored its opponents, 154-42; Paonia has outscored opponents, 202-25, in 15 games.
Game one will be played at Burns O. Drake Field in Hotchkiss, and game two will be played at Volunteer Park in Paonia. Both games begin at 4 p.m.
Two of the four marijuana questions on the November ballot were narrowly approved by voters in the City of Delta. Measure 2F allows the establishment of medical marijuana centers. Measure 2H permits the establishment of medical marijuana cultivation, testing, research and manufacturing facilities.
