The Paonia Eagles volleyball team is off to a strong start to the season after posting wins over Plateau Valley and Norwood last week.
Mckenna Palmer had 17 kills and served six aces in the Paonia Eagles' season-opening 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-22) win on Aug. 29. Palmer also averaged almost five serve receives per game. Palmer and senior Randi Rapke also came up with 10 digs each, and Rapke had 10 serve receives for the match. Sophomore setter Carly Horn had 15 assists and junior Poppy Lightfoot nine.
Paonia glided to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-19) non-conference win at Norwood last Thursday.
In early-season Colorado Preps rankings, Paonia debuts at No. 4 among Class 2A teams. In the 2A/1A Western Slope League, West Grand comes in at No. 6.
Paonia played 3A Coal Ridge (Silt/New Castle) Tuesday. It was the season-opener for the Lady Titans. The Lady Eagles are at home this weekend, hosting conference matches against Soroco (2-4) at 5 p.m. Friday and Hayden (1-0) at 3 p.m. Saturday. On Sept. 12 Paonia travels to Gunnison (3A WSL).
During a preliminary hearing in Delta District Court on Tuesday, Jan. 15, Judge Steven Schultz found probable cause for second degree murder charges against Heather Jones.
Jones previously faced three counts in the shooting of Ryan Redifer in Paonia on Jan. 12, 2018 -- assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree and violation of a protection order.
