After a season-opening loss, the Paonia Eagles gave Monte Vista a drubbing on its own turf Friday for a 41-0 win. The Pirates (0-2, 1A Southern Peaks League) were coming off of a 24-0 season-opening loss to 2A Alamosa.
The Eagles had 393 yards on the ground, led by Anthony Felice with 18 carries for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Felice was named overall Player of the Game.
With two sacks and six solo tackles, O-line/D-line specialist Levi Peterson was named outstanding defensive player of the game; and with 19 yards on two punt returns, Soul Connolly was recognized as outstanding player on special teams.
Jesse Burns had 12 carries for 82 yards and one TD; on defense Burns completed four solo and two assisted tackles.
Sackett Chesnik had eight carries for 52 yards and two TDs, and on defense made seven solo and two assisted tackles. Grey Neal averaged 7.5 yards in 10 carries, and Logan Green picked up eight yards on one carry and was 5-for-6 in PATs.
David Lozano had two 50-yard kickoffs; Austin Norris had five solo tackles, one sack and two assisted tackles; and Felice had eight solo and two assisted tackles.
The Eagles led, 14-0, at halftime and scored two TDs in both the third and fourth quarters.
The win came on the heels of Paonia's season-opening 38-0 loss to Centauri.
This Friday the Eagles face another big challenge in Coal Ridge at 7 p.m. The Titans (1-1, 2A WSL) dominated Hotchkiss last Friday night for a 45-7 win.
