Last Thursday, Delta High School hosted its second Delta Twilight Invitational track and field meet. The only teams invited are the four Delta County schools and Olathe.
Ten girls' meet records and six boys' meet records were broken.
Because it's a small meet -- no single race or field event had more than three heats or flights -- points were awarded to the top five placers in each event. Paonia head coach Brian Mitchem said the small size of the meet, which began at 3 p.m., means it moves quickly. It also gives athletes a chance to try out new events and to relax and have fun.
Paonia senior Alexandra Eaton posted two season-best (SB) times and set one personal record (PR). Eaton won the 100-meter dash in a meet record time of 13.48 second and won silver in the 200m with PR of 28.37. Eaton also placed fourth in 300m hurdles (51.48).
The girls placed fourth with 35 points. Abby LaBounty finished third in the 400m dash in 1:07.96 (PR). The 800m relay team of Eaton, Poppy Lightfoot, Sadie Lee and LaBounty placed third (1:55.63).
In field events, Sadie Miller placed second in long jump with a PR of 15 feet, 3.5 inches. Sabrina Leighton was second in shot put with a throw of 34'-9".
On the boys side, Paonia scored 32.5 points. Harley Ewert set a meet record of 23.82 in the 200m dash. In the 200m dash, junior Logan Green finished third in 24.87. Green also took second in the 400m dash with a PR of 55.55.
Ethan Bartlett finished second in the 1600m run with a time of 5:08.22. In the 300m hurdles, senior Calvin Reese set a PR of 46.05 to place fourth.
