Paonia senior Ethan Bartlett broke the 17-minute barrier to place fifth Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Anna Banana Invitational cross-country race at Snooks Bottom in Fruita.

Bartlett's time of 16 minutes, 52.55 seconds also broke the 2013 school record of 17:08.68 set by Jason Sturgis at the 2A Region 4 meet in Delta. Bartlett was the first Class 2A runner to cross the line at Anna Banana, coming in 46-100ths of a second behind Delta senior John Ames.

In what was their Homecoming week race, the Paonia boys finished fifth overall with 128 points. Harley Ewert ran a season-best time of 19:01.07 to place 24th. Freshman Alyster Birk finished in 34th place with a time of 19:52.07 and classmate Alejandro Garcia placed 39th in 20:07.45. Senior Calvin Reese ran a season- and personal-best time of 21:10.93 to place 48th, and freshmen Jose Mojarro and Aidan Zerr ran personal-best times to finish 54th and 65th.

The Paonia girls scored 89 points to place third at Anna Banana. Katya Schwieterman placed ninth in 21:11.39 and Tawny Roberts placed 11th in 21:38.47. All seven varsity girls set season-best (SB) or personal-best times. Alex Eaton placed 22nd (SB 23:03.2), Sofia Gonzales placed 25th (PB 23:38.04), Jade Ellenberger 29th (SB 23:52.77), Cristina Rankin 31st (PB 24:16.94), and Abby Reedy placed 47th (SB 26:05.07).

Now in its 15th year, the Anna Banana meet is held in memory of Anna Janowitz, a member of the Fruita Monument High School cross-country team who was tragically killed in a vehicle accident on her way to practice.

The Delta boys scored 138 points to place seventh overall at Anna Banana. John Ames ran a season-best time of 16 minutes, 52.09 seconds to place fourth, and Shad Lewis set his fastest Anna Banana course time of 17:37.78 to finish 11th.

Sophomore Doyle Young finished 45th in a season-best (SB) time of 20:37.75, Andrew Toole placed 47th (SB 21:07.59), sophomore Enrique Gonzalez placed 55th (SB 21:54.33), and junior Jack Jones placed 64th (SB 23:48.45).

The Panther girls placed sixth overall at Anna Banana with 148 points. Beki Atchley finished 23rd in 23:21.38 and Grace Hall placed 28th in a season-best 23:46.46. Five Panther girls set season-best or personal-best (PB) times. Emma Corbasson placed 34th (PB 24:28.73), Abby Williams 35th ( SB 24:34.75), Hanna Hollenbeck 44th (SB 25:44.50), and Shoshanna Vigil (PB 27:07.75).

Keller 17th
at Ridgway Ramble

Freshman Karlie Egging was the top finisher for the Hotchkiss girls Friday at the Ramble at the Reservoir cross-country meet at Ridgway State Park. Egging finished seventh overall with a time of 27 minutes, 36.14 seconds. Mariah Griffith placed 26th with a time of 29:35.3, Grace Hathaway was 31st (31:02.62), and Ela Adair placed 37th (32:35.41). The girls placed fifth overall with 56 points.

In the boys division, Tevin Keller finished 17th overall with a time of 22:28.92, and Will Ela placed 25th in 23:44.79. Pablo Camacho and Ben Rodriguez placed 50th and 51st, respectively, in 29:20.33 and 29:22.69. Hotchkiss scored 66 points to finish sixth overall.

Olathe CC teams
3rd at Ramble

Both Olathe cross country teams had top-10 finishers to place third Friday at the Ramble at the Reservoir cross-country meet at Ridgway State Park.

On the boys' side, Alecxis Hernandez led the Pirates with a fourth-place time of 21 minutes, 1.61 seconds, with Layton McLaughlin placing eighth in 21:43.01. Angel Sanchez placed 18th in 22:31.13, Kael Mattics and Miguel Silva Almanza placed 21st and 22nd, respectively (22:56.86, 23:06.85), and Emmanuel Ledsma placed 27th in 23:49.02.

Lupita Garcia finished fourth at the Ramble with a time of 24:37.72. Angela Alcaraz and Jaden Valdez placed 15th and 16th, respectively, in 26:11.22 and 27:35.52. Cheyanne Germann placed 24th in 29:15.87, and Bailey Harris finished 35th in 31:29.87.
