Fall sports, with the exception of boys golf, is slated to get underway this week. Golf programs at both Delta High School and Cedaredge High School have been playing since Aug. 11. Both teams participated in the Cedaredge and Delta Invitationals. The Bruins were scheduled to play at Battlement Mesa on Aug. 15 while the Panthers and Bruins were in Montrose at Black Canyon on Aug. 16.

Delta was scheduled to play in Craig on Monday, Aug. 22 and Steamboat Springs on Tuesday, Aug. 23. Both teams are scheduled to play Bookcliff on Monday, Aug 29.

The other fall sports programs are getting some of the limelight this week.

Delta and Cedaredge softball teams opened play on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at home against Basalt and Aspen respectively.

The Panthers play a tournament in Eaton on Saturday, Aug. 27, and again on Tuesday against Montrose at 5 p.m. (varsity).

Cedaredge will have a rest until Sept. 3, when it travels to Gunnison to face Faith Christian at 11 a.m. Delta will also play Faith Christian, in Gunnison, on Sept. 3.

Delta County's soccer team, made of players from the county schools, opens play on Aug. 27 at Cortez starting at 1 p.m. The Panthers then face Montrose at 4 p.m. on Sept. 30.

In cross country, Delta County schools are in action on Aug. 27 in Basalt.

Two Delta County volleyball teams (Hotchkiss and Paonia) kick off their schedules with the Bulldogs late in August, hosting Ouray on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. (varsity) and traveling to Caprock Academy on Tuesday, Aug. 30, for another 6 p.m. varsity matchup. Paonia is at Plateau Valley on Aug. 30 with a 6 p.m. varsity contest to begin its 2016 season.

Football will undoubtedly take the spotlight for two high schools this week. Delta's Panthers will face 3A Durango on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. in Delta. The Panthers will begin their season of 2A competition with a tough opponent. "The Demons were in last year's 4A state playoffs," noted Delta coach Ben Johnson.

There's a bit of concern for Johnson and the Panthers. "They're a good team and it'll be interesting to see how we do against them."

Also in the mix for Delta is Bayfield, last year's Class 2A State Champions. Johnson is excited to play that game with high expectations.

Cedaredge's Bruins will also be tested early in the season when they take on Central's junior varsity squad on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Grand Junction.

The DCI will publish its Fall Sports Special on Aug. 31 with information on Delta County teams, including highlights of many players who might bear watching and all the team schedules throughout Delta County.
