A big "thank you" is due the Sunderland family -- Randy, Pat, Ron, Roxanne, Norman and Gladys -- for their approach to reporting and publishing news pertaining to Delta County in the DCI. Prior to their arrival the previous owner, publisher and editor were inclined to "sensationalize" the news rather than report the facts. The result of the Sunderlands' ownership is that the advertisers supported the newspaper by placing ads (I'm sure it took some selling efforts by Roxanne and her associates) and subscribers purchased the newspaper.
Of course, Sunderlands could not have done the job alone. They had some very fine reporters reporting the news in an unbiased manner. Subjects that could have created conflict were reported fairly, but not to the detriment of the community. In other words, the DCI helped to create an atmosphere that projected Delta County as a good place to live and work.
During the time the Sunderlands owned the DCI one project they helped to promote was the building of Bill Heddles Recreation Center. It was an undertaking that has been beneficial to a large number of residents of the city and surrounding area. Neighboring communities still marvel at the success of the center and wonder how Delta leaders were able to gather support for its construction. Randy and the DCI were a large factor in its going from a concept to completion.
Norman and Gladys stepped aside a few years ago and are enjoying their retirement. It is hoped that Randy and Pat have many years to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Good luck to Roxanne and Ron as they continue to work with the new ownership of the DCI.
On May 1, the Cedaredge board of trustees met for a special meeting to appropriate an additional $35,000 from reserves as a loan to the golf course fund.
These funds will be used to purchased a used turf utility vehicle, a spray rig, and to make improvements to the kitchen and dining area of the restaurant.
