The third annual First Colorado National Bank tournament title concluded Dec. 22. Delta won titles in both the girls and boys divisions with Hotchkiss claiming consolation honors in the girls division and Cedaredge in the boys.
Hotchkiss dealt Paonia's Eagles their second loss of the weekend, 54-18, and Cedaredge's boys were 66-49 winners over Hotchkiss.
HHS 54, PHS 18
Junior Elsie Vazquez dropped in eight points for Hotchkiss in a 20-7 first-quarter spurt on Dec. 22 in consolation round play. Junior Shay Glaser added another five counters and senior Kaiya Firor another four in the offensive run.
In the second quarter, Hotchkiss didn't give the young Eagles a chance to breathe with an 18-6 Bulldog advantage. Vazquez fueled the charge with another eight-point effort for Hotchkiss.
Hotchkiss added another 14 points in the third quarter and finished with four counters in the final stanza for a 54-18 score.
Paonia senior Poppy Lightfoot did not score from the field but had five points on 11 free throw attempts for the game. Junior Paige Fister finished with four points.
Hotchkiss' Vazquez finished the game with 18 points to lead all scorers with teammates Glaser and Carson Collins adding nine and eight points, respectively.
Bruins 66, HHS 49
Hotchkiss enjoyed an early lead after outscoring the Bruins 16-12 in the first quarter. Senior Jacob Stucker and junior Evan Mattison added five points in the run. Sophomore Conner Brooks had five points to lead Cedaredge's offense in the period.
The game's complexion changed dramatically in the second quarter with Cedaredge taking advantage of the Bulldogs' miscues and missed shots to take a 34-25 lead at halftime following a 22-9 run in the second quarter. Sophomore Jacob Brown fueled the Bruins' surge with three goals from behind the big arc in the period. Senior Jared Reynolds added five points to the run.
Junior Hunter Bryant netted eight points in the third quarter, and Stucker added six more counters, helping the Bulldogs outscore Cedaredge 16-14 in the frame.
The Bruins regained their mojo in the final quarter to go on an 18-8 run that effectively put the game away, 66-49.
Brooks led a trio of double-digit scorers for the Bruins with 17 points, followed by Reynolds with 16 and Brown with 11.
Stucker was Hotchkiss' top scorer with 14 points followed by eight points each from Bryant, Mattison and Jacob Palecki.
Hotchkiss' basketball schedule resumes following the Christmas break with Caprock Academy coming to Hotchkiss on Jan. 8 for varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.
West Grand makes a visit on Jan. 11 (6 and 7:30 p.m.) with Hayden in town Saturday, Jan. 12 for games at 4 and 5:30 p.m.
