As a result of a meeting to discuss the First Friday Art Walk, this Cedaredge event has been changed to a First Saturday Art Walk and Flea Market, to start June 1.
On Monday, April 22, about 14 people from various organizations met to discuss the best option for showcasing and promoting Cedaredge through an event like the art walk.
Essentially the event will now become an extended walking circuit, with an addition of a flea market, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first Saturdays of June, July, August and September (June 1, July 6, Aug. 3, Sept. 7).
The meeting resulted from independent conversations on how to make an annual summer event series a better experience. During the meeting several people mentioned that for this to be a successful community event there needs to be more community effort.
One issue in the past was responsibility falling all on one person. Now a committee has been formed to help distribute the tasks.
Several ideas were tossed around between those present. Some people had suggested a farmers market at the event but it was quickly realized this likely wouldn't work since the majority of produce isn't harvested until July and this wouldn't be a main driver of traffic.
They also discussed having the event on a Sunday but since most businesses in Cedaredge aren't open on Sundays this wouldn't be ideal.
Eventually the group agreed on keeping the art walk idea but extending vendor types. Several people liked the idea of a flea market, which would only build upon the area's love for garage-type sales. Vendors could purchase a booth space, the cost of which is still being discussed.
As of now, the plan is to ask businesses on the walking loop if they want to participate in the event by being open, contributing to the advertising efforts and engaging in the planning process. A walking map will be created of all the participating businesses to use for pre-advertisement and at the event.
The walking loop would be about a half mile long, from Main Street businesses to the AppleShed, then across to The Old Slaughterhouse.
Tentatively the first of these Art Walk & Flea Market events will be held June 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Surface Creek Animal Shelter recently received a donation of 4B's Brewery's last beer and mentioned using the first art walk as an opportunity to serve the beer as a fundraiser.
The group emphasized the need to advertise heavily, so citizens are encouraged to keep their eyes and ears peeled for further details.
