George Philip Barker died on Friday, March 22, 2019. He was 73.
Mr. Barker was born Feb. 22, 1946, to Ira and Joyce Barker in Madera, Calif.
He spent his early life in Lake County, Calif., as a skilled carpenter. He hunted in Colorado for several years and fell in love with the North Fork Valley. He moved there with his family in 1981.
He bought the Shoe and Saddle Shop in Paonia from Vern Mattern in 1984. He became well known for his custom tack and leatherwork. He also designed many products and mine belts for the mining industry throughout Colorado for more than 20 years.
Mr. Barker and his wife, Mary, bought Paonia Liquors in 1992 and then sold the business in 2018.
He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, horseback and ATV riding in the high country, his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary; son, Chris (Tiffany) Barker; grandsons, Jordan Barker and Brayden Barker; brothers, Roger and David; and extended family.
Mr. Barker was preceded in death by his sister, Joanne; and his brother, Larry.
No services are planned at this time.
