Volunteers of America and Horizons Care Center are proud to announce Lillian Pickard as the recipient of this year's Heart for Service, Volunteer of the Year Award for Delta County. Each year this award is given to an outstanding volunteer who has made an exceptional contribution to uplifting the lives of vulnerable older adults in one of the organization's programs.

Each Volunteers of America program that utilizes volunteers made a single nomination based on the volunteer's amount of involvement, motivation, and positive impact to the program and residents. Judging was based upon length of service, character and, most importantly, do they exemplify the faith-based, mission and vision of Volunteers of America.

Pickard has been a dedicated volunteer at Horizons Care Center for the past 23 years. She began volunteering in 1996 after visiting a friend. She volunteers every week on Wednesdays and provides one-on-one attention to the residents. Many residents look forward to her weekly visit and mark the time for her return. She also assists the life enrichment department staff at their Walmart shopping outings. When needed, she will walk with a resident around the store and help them shop and make purchases.

Kathy Meehan, life enrichment assistant and nominator, said, "Lillian's Christian lifestyle shows when she visits with residents. Her being with them makes a big difference for those who would not otherwise have visitors. The residents have come to know and love her."

The Heart for Service award was created to acknowledge the enormous impact volunteers have on the individual residents and their families at Volunteers of America programs and communities in western Colorado.

The award was presented at a lunch ceremony in the community living room where Pickard and a guest attended along with directors and other staff.
