Turnovers proved costly for the Hotchkiss Bulldogs as they traveled to Steamboat Springs Friday night. The loss puts them at 3-2 going into the big rivalry game against Paonia this Friday.
The Sailors scored three times in the first quarter, including a 39-yard interception run by Jameson Tracy. Tanner Raper tacked on two more touchdowns in the second quarter, both resulting from passes from quarterback Drew Bowers. Finn Russell's final kick of the half was no good, and the first half ended with Steamboat holding a comfortable 34-0 lead.
Steamboat scored one more time, with a one-yard run in the third quarter. The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard with a 24-yard pass from Yahir Chavez, his longest of the game, to Jacob Palecki. Kayia Firor's kick added a point and the clock wound down with the final score of 7-40.
For the game, quarterback Yahir Chavez went six for 13 and a total of 88 passing yards. Jace Peebles led the rushing game with 70 yards, followed by Chavez with 60.
Despite the three turnovers, Coach Curtis Hintz said the kids kept playing hard, which was a positive.
"Coming up we start conference play vs. Paonia," the coach said. "They are a tough, well coached team and of course it's a rivalry game. Every week in our conference is going to be a battle. Paonia brings some experienced kids into the game that they will rely on. Our kids will work hard this week and get prepared for Friday night."
The game will be held in Paonia; kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
