In sprint relays, a few seconds can make the difference between a good race and a great one. On Saturday, the 800-meter sprint medley relay team of Yasmine Gaub, Elsie Vasquez, Jordan Tamayo and Kaiya Firor ran a great race, cutting 6.5 seconds off its prior best time to finish second in 1:53.39. Hotchkiss was in sixth place at the final handoff, with Firor passing all but one team and finishing 11-100ths of a second behind Montrose.

The MileSplit US second team silver standard time also moves Hotchkiss into first place in state 2A standings in the event.

Firor also won the girls 100-meter dash in 12.84. Her April 20 time in the event puts her in second place in top-18 standings ahead of this week's 2A/1A Western Slope League meet.

On the boys' side, the 3200-meter relay team of Sam Rodriquez, Saul Cortez, Myles Zoutte and Robert Cochran placed fourth in a season-best time of 8:51.06, an improvement of more than five seconds. Hotchkiss remained in eighth place in MaxPreps top-18 state standings in the event.

Darrin Young won the shot put with a preliminary throw of 46 feet, 2 inches before heading out to help with prom. Young's April 3 throw of 48-2 put him in first place in state. Kevin Chavez placed fourth in shot put with a PR of 41 feet, moving him up two places to the 17th spot in the top 18 state qualifiers.

The 800 sprint medley relay team of George Arroyo, Elijah Patrick, Jace Peebles and Saul Cortez placed fifth with a time of 1:49.78. Jace Peebles also placed seventh in the 110 hurdles and is currently ranked 10th in state in the event.

Because the Junior-Senior Prom was held Saturday night, many student-athletes didn't compete at Montrose or didn't stay for the entire meet.
