Hugh "Sonny" DeVere Carpenter Jr. of Delta died Feb. 24, 2017. He was 80.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 1, at IOOF Lodge #116 in Delta. Inurnment will take place in May at Gunnison Cemetery in Gunnison.
Mr. Carpenter was born May 5, 1936, to Hugh and Ida (Evans) Carpenter in Cebolla. He grew up on the family ranch at Ohio Creek and the family's resort in Cebolla. He graduated from Gunnison High School in 1955.
On Dec. 7, 1957, he married Myra Evonne Wright in Gunnison. They lived in Gunnison, then moved to Abiliene, Texas, in 1990, before moving to Delta in 1994.
A carpenter by trade, he enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in his barn. He was a member and served as a deacon for Grand Mesa Southern Baptist Church in Cedaredge. Mr. Carpenter was also a member of the IOOF Lodge #116.
He wrestled and played football during his high school years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Evonne; daughters, Diana "Lynn" (Don) Cardrin and Sheila Carpenter, all of Delta; brother, George (Pat) Carpenter of Salida; sister, Joyce (Barry) Bromley of Platteville; brother-in-law, Wayne (Jean) Wright and sister-in-law, Pam Wright, all of Grand Junction; sister-in-law, Vicki Wright of Louisiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Carpenter; and brothers-in-law, Arnold and Larry Wright.

Two of the four marijuana questions on the November ballot were narrowly approved by voters in the City of Delta. Measure 2F allows the establishment of medical marijuana centers. Measure 2H permits the establishment of medical marijuana cultivation, testing, research and manufacturing facilities.
