On Dec. 27, at approximately 12:33 p.m., officers of the Delta Police Department responded to Safeway on a report of a shoplifter. As officers arrived, the male subject ran east across Stafford Lane, behind Taco Bell and into the brush field. Officer William Hammon and K-9 Raico were requested to respond. K-9 Raico was deployed to track the male subject, later identified as Alan Scott Hawk, Jr., 34, homeless in Delta. Raico successfully tracked Alan Hawk approximately 647 feet "as the crow flies" from the starting point to where he was found hiding in a brush pile.
Hawk was taken into custody on three warrants and issued a summons to court for alleged shoplifting. Hawk was transported to the Delta County Jail where he is being held on the three warrants with $305, $305 and $3,000 bond.
A collaborative effort between the Delta County Sheriff's Office and municipal law enforcement agencies throughout Delta County has resulted in a proposal for a 1 percent sales tax increase to fund public safety. A PowerPoint presentation titled "Back the Badge" is starting to make the rounds at city/town council meetings, service club luncheons and other events.
