Paonia Junior-Senior High School students recently shared their wood-building skills with kindergarteners at Paonia Elementary School. Children, big and small, worked together to open their own version of Santa's Workshop by building birdhouses for their families and friends.
PJSHS shop teacher Blaine Escher's industrious students designed, measured, cut, and started the houses, and delivered birdhouse kits to the elementary school. Side-by-side, the elves screwed on the roof and base of each house. It warmed every heart to see the older students put their arms on their apprentices' shoulders as they said, "C'mon, let's go build a birdhouse." How proud the kindergarteners were to use their hands and real tools to build.
"My students said, 'Making 40 birdhouses in three days was worth how happy that made those kids,' " said Mr. Escher. To make it more special, a generous Secret Santa Papaw purchased all the boards for the project.
